Safeguarding Your Finances while Traveling for the Holidays
Like almost half of the United States population, you may plan to travel between Thanksgiving and mid-January.
While navigating traffic delays, packing light so your suitcase holds every holiday gift and making sure your famous pumpkin pie doesn’t fall over during the car ride, the safety of your finances may easily slip through the cracks.
According to a recent study by AARP, over 82% of adults have reported experiencing some form of fraud during the holidays, with the risk increasing when travel is involved.
While the hustle and bustle of holiday travel can keep you occupied, it’s essential to protect your pockets so that reporting fraudulent charges or a stolen card doesn’t get added to your busy to-do list.
As you start packing for your trip, remember the following tips to ensure your money remains secure this holiday season:
- Experts suggest using cards is safer since credit and debit cards provide built-in protections in case they are lost or stolen.
- Please inform Piedmont Advantage Credit Union about your travel plans, dates, and destinations. You can do this either through the MyPACUCard app or by contacting us via our website. This will help prevent your credit or debit card from being flagged for potential fraud when used in unfamiliar locations.
- Report a lost or stolen card immediately. Additionally, keep track of the toll-free numbers on the back of your cards to quickly report lost or stolen cards.
- Don't keep all your cards in one place. You risk losing everything at once. Store the extras in your hotel safe or in a separate pocket.
- When withdrawing cash, use your debit card at ATMs you trust, preferably those at financial institutions.
- To safeguard against pickpockets or purse snatchers while traveling in crowded, unfamiliar areas, keep your wallet in a zippered pocket or pouch. Ensure your purse is secured with a zipper or latch, and carry it close to your body.
We understand that keeping your finances in check during this busy time of year can be challenging. However, it's still essential to be prepared. With these tips in your toolkit, you can enjoy the holidays, savor delicious food, and create lasting memories.
